The cold reduces the inflammatory response. The active compression physically pushes edema fluid out of the joint capsule and back into your lymphatic system. Together they've been clinically shown to reduce post-operative narcotic use compared to cold therapy alone.
🏥 Clinical Grade Same pad used in orthopedic surgery centers
This is the pad Breg supplies with new Wave and VPULSE systems — the same clinical-grade construction used in hospital post-op units, orthopedic surgery centers, and physical therapy clinics nationwide. Breg is the second-largest orthopedic bracing provider in the United States, partnering with 2,500+ clinics and 6,000+ orthopedic surgeons.

HIP-SPECIFIC COVERAGE FOR YOUR WAVE OR VPULSE SYSTEM

The hip is one of the harder joints to treat with cold therapy because of its depth. Unlike the knee or ankle where cold packs sit close to the joint capsule, the hip is buried under substantial soft tissue — muscles, fat, fascia — that acts as insulation between an external cold source and the actual joint. This is why cold-only therapy sometimes underperforms for hip patients: the cold barely reaches where it needs to go, and any edema that forms in the joint capsule has no mechanical assistance clearing out.

The hip pad's role in the Wave/VPULSE system is to solve exactly this: cold penetration and edema clearance at hip depth. When connected to your unit, chilled water circulates through internal channels while separate air chambers cycle compression rhythmically — the compression drives the cold deeper into the joint while pushing edema fluid out. Anatomically shaped to sit over the greater trochanter and wrap the hip joint, with strap sections that secure through the waist and around the upper thigh.

The universal fit means one pad covers most adult patients — waist 33"–53", thigh 8"–31" — so it works whether you're on the smaller or larger end of the adult range. Hook-and-loop straps adjust for changing post-op swelling. Sealed dual-channel construction (separate sealed water channels and separate sealed air chambers) keeps the outer fabric dry against skin. Designed for extended wear including overnight use.

    Order this pad if:
    • You own a Polar Care Wave or VPULSE unit and need a hip pad — original, replacement, backup, or additional
    • Your original hip pad is wearing out — straps loosening, water channels seeping, air chambers not holding compression, or general fabric wear from extended use
    • You want a second pad on hand during long recovery periods (bilateral surgery, extended rehab, backup for travel)
    • You've moved on from a previous injury and need to switch pad type to hip after using shoulder, knee, or ankle
    • Your waist circumference is 33" – 53" and thigh circumference is 8" – 31" (universal-fit range covers most adults)

Hip depth requires active compression:The reason this pad's active compression feature matters more for the hip than for many other joints — the hip is buried under soft tissue, and mechanical compression is what makes the cold therapy reach the joint capsule where it needs to work.
Designed for how you actually recover:Post-op hip patients spend a lot of time lying down. The pad is designed for that reality — applied by a caregiver while you're supine, adjusted with straps that don't require you to reach or bend, and comfortable for the long overnight sessions that are the norm for the first several weeks.

    TIP
Have a caregiver watch the hip application video before your surgery. Hip precautions (no flexion past 90°, no crossing legs, no bending forward) mean you can't easily apply this pad to yourself for the first several weeks. A family member or caregiver will handle applications. Watch the video together at your pre-op appointment so everyone knows the technique.

    TIP
Print a copy before surgery. Keep the instruction sheet with your other post-op paperwork so caregivers can reference it during recovery — especially useful when you're on pain medication and might not remember details from earlier readings.
    FAQs
    Common questions before ordering
    (compatibility · fit · durability · insurance)
Which Breg systems is this pad compatible with?
    Compatible with:
    ✓ Polar Care Wave
    ✓ VPULSE

    NOT compatible with:
    ✗ Polar Care Cube
    ✗ Polar Care Glacier
    ✗ Polar Care Cub
    ✗ Polar Care Kodiak

Why: The Wave and VPULSE deliver cold + active pneumatic compression, requiring a dual-line connection (one line for water, one for air). The Cube, Glacier, and Cub deliver cold only through a single water line. The Kodiak uses a different pad family entirely ("Intelli-Flo").

How to check your unit: The model name is usually printed on the front of the unit or on a sticker on the back. If unsure, call (713) 695-4939 and describe it — we can usually identify it over the phone.
    Will this pad fit me?
Universal fit designed for adult patients:

    • Waist circumference: 33" – 53" (84 – 135 cm) — measure at your natural waistline
    • Thigh circumference: 8" – 31" (20 – 79 cm) — measure at the widest point of the upper thigh

Most adult hip patients fall comfortably within this range. The pad wraps around your waist and secures to the upper thigh with adjustable hook-and-loop straps.

If you're outside the range, call (713) 695-4939 to verify fit before ordering. Larger patients above 53" waist or smaller patients below 33" may need to discuss options.

Works on either hip — not left- or right-specific.
How do I know when to replace my current hip pad?
The C00013 hip pad is durable and designed for months of use, but pads do eventually wear out. Signs it's time to replace:

    • Water channels seeping or leaking — obvious moisture on the outer fabric during use
    • Air chambers not holding compression — the pad doesn't inflate normally, or inflates unevenly
    • Straps stretched out — the hook-and-loop no longer holds the pad securely in place
    • Fabric wear — visible tears, worn spots, or persistent discoloration despite cleaning
    • Hygiene concerns — after extended use, especially over surgical incisions, some patients prefer to replace rather than continue cleaning
    • Change of user — if the pad is being used by a different family member than before

With normal use and proper care, most patients get through their entire initial recovery on one pad. Heavy use (24/7 for weeks) may shorten this — call (713) 695-4939 if you have questions about your specific pad's condition.
Can I use this after hip replacement, hip resurfacing, or hip arthroscopy?
Yes — these are the primary use cases for the pad. Orthopedic surgeons routinely prescribe motorized cold compression for:

    • Total hip replacement (THA) — anterior, posterior, or lateral approach
    • Hip resurfacing
    • Partial hip replacement / hemiarthroplasty
    • Hip arthroscopy — labral repair, FAI correction
    • Hip fracture ORIF
    • Trochanteric bursectomy
    • Hip revision surgery

Follow your surgeon's specific protocol on when to start therapy, session length, and duration of use.
How does this work with hip precautions?
The pad is designed for use while following your hip precautions — you don't have to violate any of them to apply or use it.

    Standard post-op hip precautions:
    • No hip flexion past 90 degrees
    • No crossing legs (adduction past midline)
    • No internal rotation
    • Sleep on non-operated side (with abduction pillow)
    • Elevated toilet seat
    • No bending forward from the waist

    How the pad accommodates:
    • Applied while lying down (supine or on non-operated side)
    • Adjustable straps allow application without hip flexion
    • Family member or caregiver typically applies for the first several weeks
    • Stays in place during position changes

Practical tip: Have your caregiver apply the pad in the morning while you're still in bed. They can adjust or remove throughout the day without you having to bend or reach.
How long should I use the therapy per session?
Follow your surgeon's specific protocol. Typical usage patterns:

    • Post-op first 72 hours: Often continuous use (4–8+ hours), with breaks only for skin checks and bathroom trips
    • Post-op weeks 1-2: Multiple sessions per day totaling 4–8 hours, especially overnight
    • Post-op weeks 3-4: 2–3 sessions per day of 30–60 minutes, especially before and after PT
    • Post-op weeks 5-6+: As needed for pain and swelling flare-ups

Signs to stop or reduce: Skin discoloration (white or blue), numbness persisting after removing the pad, blistering, or increased pain during therapy.

Your Wave/VPULSE unit may allow independent adjustment of cold and compression settings — your surgeon or PT can guide optimal settings.
Is this covered by insurance, HSA, or FSA?
HSA / FSA: Yes — qualified medical expense. Pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout or submit for reimbursement with your receipt.

Insurance: Varies widely by carrier and plan. Some plans cover the pad as durable medical equipment (DME) with documented medical necessity:

    • HCPCS E0218 — Water circulating cold pad with pump
    • HCPCS E0676 — Intermittent limb compression device

Post-op hip patients typically qualify easily for medical necessity. Call (713) 695-4939 for help understanding what your plan requires.
How do I clean and maintain the pad?
The C00013 hip pad is designed for repeated use throughout your recovery:

    • Between sessions: Wipe the outside with a soft cloth to remove any moisture from your skin
    • Daily cleaning: Wipe outer fabric with mild disinfectant (isopropyl alcohol or diluted household disinfectant). Air dry before next use
    • Never submerge or machine-wash — the sealed water and air channels are designed for controlled circulation, not immersion cleaning
    • Never use bleach or harsh chemicals — can degrade the pad material and seals
    • Storage: Store flat in a cool, dry place. Don't kink or compress the water/air lines
    • Between users (family sharing): Thoroughly disinfect all surfaces; consider replacement if extensive shared use

Well-maintained pad lasts through the entire initial recovery period, months of PT, and often years of occasional use.
When should I NOT use this therapy?
Active compression therapy has real contraindications. Consult your doctor before use if you have:

    Circulation concerns:
    • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) — active or history without cardiologist clearance
    • Peripheral vascular disease
    • Raynaud's disease or other vasospastic conditions
    • Diabetes with reduced sensation in the treatment area
    • Compromised local circulation

    Other conditions:
    • Cold hypersensitivity or cold urticaria
    • Cryoglobulinemia
    • Active infection or open wound in the treatment area (unless surgeon-approved)
    • Severe hypertension
    • Skin conditions that could be irritated by pad material
    • Nerve damage or numbness (may not feel warning signs)
    • Rheumatoid arthritis — some patients respond poorly to cold

Stop use if you experience: Increased pain during therapy, skin turning white or bluish, persistent numbness after removing the pad, blistering, or allergic reaction. Always follow your medical provider's guidance.
Can I use this for both hips (bilateral hip surgery)?
Bilateral hip surgery is uncommon and usually staged 3–6 months apart because bilateral hip precautions plus non-weight-bearing on both sides is extremely difficult to manage.

If you do have bilateral hip surgery:
    • The pad works on either hip (not left- or right-specific)
    • Buy two pads to run cold compression on both hips sequentially (20 minutes on one, then switch)
    • Some patients rotate a single pad between hips throughout the day
    • Discuss with your surgeon whether the Wave's therapy schedule allows simultaneous or sequential bilateral use

Call (713) 695-4939 if you're planning bilateral hip surgery and want help planning the equipment setup.
Can I use my Wave/VPULSE with pads for other joints?
Yes — the same Wave or VPULSE unit works with all Wave-compatible pads. The Breg cold compression pad family includes:

    • Standard Knee Pad
    • Large Knee Pad
    • Shoulder Pad
    • Foot/Ankle Pad — covers both foot and ankle
    • Back Pad
    • Hip Pad (this product, C00013)
    • Universal Pad

Handy if you or a family member need cold compression for a different joint later. Each pad uses the same dual-line connection to your Wave/VPULSE unit.

About this product — Quick answers

    Ready to order?
Call (713) 695-4939. We'll verify compatibility and get the pad shipped or ready for pickup — usually same-day for in-store pickup if you call ahead.
