DEVILBISS 555DS COMPACT 5 LITER HOME OXYGEN CONCENTRATOR OVERVIEW

If you've just been prescribed home oxygen therapy — whether for COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, post-COVID lung complications, congestive heart failure, or recovery from major surgery — you probably have a lot of questions right now. And maybe some fear. That's normal. Oxygen therapy is one of the most fundamental things medicine can offer: helping you breathe.

Here's what nobody tells you at the doctor's office: when breathing becomes work, everything else in your day becomes harder. Climbing stairs. Eating meals without getting winded. Sleeping through the night. Having a full conversation. A lot of people delay starting oxygen therapy because they're worried it means "giving up" or being tethered to a bulky, loud machine that will dominate their bedroom. That fear is exactly what the DeVilbiss 555DS Compact was designed to eliminate.

The DeVilbiss 555DS 5 Liter Compact Oxygen Concentrator is the newest stationary concentrator from Drive Medical / DeVilbiss — the same U.S. manufacturer behind the best-selling 525DS 5-liter unit that has powered millions of patient-hours of home oxygen therapy. The 555DS is what you get when engineers rebuild a proven platform from the ground up: 33% smaller footprint, 29.9 pounds (6+ pounds lighter than the 525DS), quieter than a normal conversation at under 46 dBA, and 17% lower power consumption than the previous generation. The internal architecture was redesigned around a modular layout with fewer connections and clamps — fewer mechanical joints means fewer potential points of failure, and when service IS needed, it's faster and simpler.

What you're really buying isn't just a smaller machine. It's a concentrator that fits how you actually live — one you can tuck beside a nightstand instead of dominating the corner of the room. One that won't wake up a light sleeper. One that an elderly patient can reposition alone without straining. One that costs less to run 24/7. Assembled in Somerset, Pennsylvania, backed by DeVilbiss's 3-year manufacturer warranty and a 5-year expected service life. With the trusted OSD (Oxygen Sensing Device) continuously monitoring output purity, so you and your caregivers always know the therapy is working.

Purpose-Built for Real Homes 33% smaller · 6+ lb lighter · Quieter than a conversation
The 555DS isn't just a spec-sheet update — it's the DeVilbiss engineering team rethinking what a home oxygen concentrator should feel like to live with. At just 29.9 pounds and standing only 18.4" tall, it fits beside a nightstand or in a corner where the 525DS would dominate the room. At under 46 dBA, it runs quieter than a normal conversation — most patients can sleep next to it without noticing. And 17% lower power consumption than the previous generation means it's cheaper to run 24/7, and internal components run cooler which extends their life. For elderly patients living alone, light sleepers, or anyone in a smaller home or apartment — this is the concentrator that actually fits.
Next-Generation Design Fewer connections · Easier service · 5-year expected service life
The 555DS is built around a redesigned modular internal architecture with fewer connections and clamps than any previous DeVilbiss concentrator. Fewer mechanical joints means fewer potential points of failure over the life of the machine. And when service IS needed, the modular layout makes internal components faster to access — meaning less downtime for you. Backed by a 3-year manufacturer warranty and a 5-year expected service life under normal use and manufacturer-recommended maintenance.
🇺🇸 Made in USA Assembled in Somerset, Pennsylvania
The 555DS is proudly assembled in Somerset, Pennsylvania — on the same production lines where DeVilbiss has built respiratory equipment for decades. Not sourced from overseas and rebadged. Not "designed here, made elsewhere." Built in the USA using field-proven components and manufacturing processes refined over years of home oxygen therapy experience. This is meaningful for warranty response, parts availability, and support access when you need it.

MODERN 5-LITER OXYGEN THERAPY THAT ACTUALLY FITS INTO YOUR HOME

Think about what your day looks like right now with breathing that's a struggle: getting out of bed takes effort, walking to the kitchen leaves you winded, showering exhausts you, stairs feel impossible. A properly-sized home oxygen concentrator changes that. The 555DS delivers a continuous stream of medical-grade oxygen (up to 5 LPM) through your nasal cannula, so you get the oxygen your body needs during every breath — sleeping, resting, watching TV, or moving around the house. The built-in top handle and smooth-rolling casters make it easy to move from bedroom to living room — at just 29.9 pounds, even elderly patients can reposition it alone without help. The easy-to-read digital display shows current status and any alerts at a glance — no squinting at analog gauges or wondering if the machine is working. The standard bubble humidifier bottle compatibility lets you add humidity to the oxygen stream (important for many patients — dry oxygen irritates the nasal passages). And the OSD (Oxygen Sensing Device) continuously monitors purity and alerts you if it drops — so you always know the therapy is working. The 17% lower power consumption compared to the previous 525DS-Q generation means your monthly electric bill goes up less, and the machine runs at a lower internal temperature which extends the life of every component.

    A great fit for:
    • You've been prescribed home oxygen therapy (COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, post-COVID complications, CHF, post-surgical recovery) and want a modern, reliable stationary concentrator for daily use at home
    • Your prescription is for continuous flow anywhere from 0.5 to 5 LPM — the full range with a lockable-style meter that prevents accidental adjustment
    • You value a compact, less-obtrusive design — 33% smaller footprint than the 525DS, fits beside a nightstand instead of dominating the corner of the room
    • You're a light sleeper or share a bedroom with someone who is — under 46 dBA runs quieter than a normal conversation
    • You're an elderly patient living alone and want a concentrator you can reposition without help (29.9 lb with a top grab handle and rolling casters)
    • You want to lower your electricity bill compared to older concentrators — 17% less power consumption on a machine running 24/7 adds up
    • You're upgrading from an older, heavier, louder oxygen concentrator and want the newest generation of Drive DeVilbiss engineering

    KEY FEATURES
    What you'll notice
    (in daily use)
FeatureWhat it really means for you
    💨
    Continuous flow 0.5 – 5 LPM
    Every breath gets oxygen
Delivers a constant stream of medical-grade oxygen through your nasal cannula — not pulse-dose. Every breath gets the same oxygen concentration, whether you're sleeping, resting, or moving. Adjustable in 0.5 LPM increments to match your exact prescribed flow rate.
    🧪
    87 – 96% oxygen purity
    Higher ceiling than 525DS
Higher upper-end purity than the previous generation 525DS (which was 87–93%). Meets and exceeds the 85% threshold Medicare requires for coverage under HCPCS E1390.
    🪶
    Just 29.9 pounds
    6+ lb lighter than 525DS
10–15 pounds lighter than most competing home oxygen concentrators. An elderly patient can reposition it alone without help. Reduces tripping hazards. Easier for family caregivers to move between rooms or up short steps.
    📏
    33% smaller footprint
    9.9" W × 14.6" D × 18.4" H
Genuinely fits into small bedrooms, apartments, and tight spaces where the 525DS's 24.5" tall footprint would dominate. Fits beside a nightstand or in a corner instead of forcing you to reorganize the room around it.
    🔇
    Under 46 dBA sound level
    Quieter than a conversation
For reference: normal conversation is ~60 dB, refrigerator hum ~50 dB. The 555DS runs at under 46 dBA — with a low and pleasant sound profile (lacks the sharp mechanical "thump" of older compressors). Sleep-friendly even for light sleepers.
    ⚡
    17% lower power consumption
    Real electric bill savings
17% less power draw than the previous 525DS-Q generation. On a machine running 24/7, that's real monthly savings on your electric bill. Bonus benefit: lower power draw means lower internal operating temperature, which extends the life of internal components.
    🛡️
    DeVilbiss OSD standard
    Oxygen Sensing Device
Built-in sensor continuously monitors output purity. If concentration drops below safe levels, an audible and visual alarm alerts you and your caregivers immediately. Peace of mind built into the machine.
    📱
    Easy-to-read digital display
    Modern user interface
Shows current status, flow rate, and any active alerts on a clear digital display. Easier for elderly users than analog gauges. Reduces the "is it working?" anxiety that first-time oxygen users often have.
    🔧
    Modular internal design
    Faster service, fewer failure points
Redesigned internal architecture with fewer connections and clamps than any previous DeVilbiss concentrator. Fewer mechanical joints means fewer potential failure points. When service is needed, modular components are faster to access — less downtime for you.
    💧
    Standard humidifier bottle compatible
Add humidity to prevent nose dryness
Compatible with standard bubble humidifiers. Many patients need humidified oxygen — dry oxygen irritates nasal passages, especially at higher flow rates. Add a humidifier bottle at any time.
    🚨
    Comprehensive alert system
    Simplified, modern alerts
Alerts for startup period, low oxygen output concentration, high temperature, and device malfunction. Audible + visual signals ensure you and caregivers can respond quickly to any issue.
    🛞
    Smooth-rolling casters + top handle
    Easy room-to-room movement
Built-in top grab handle for lifting when needed. Smooth-rolling casters glide over carpet, tile, and hardwood. Combined with the 29.9 lb weight, moving between rooms is genuinely one-person easy.
    📞
Up to 57 ft tubing compatible
    Long reach for room-to-room
Supports up to 57 feet of oxygen tubing. Place the concentrator in one room and reach comfortably into an adjacent room without moving the unit. Especially useful for keeping the concentrator in a quieter area away from where you sleep.
    🇺🇸
    Made in Somerset, Pennsylvania
    Same lines as DeVilbiss legacy
Built in the USA on the same production lines where DeVilbiss has manufactured respiratory equipment for decades. Not overseas-sourced and rebadged. Meaningful for warranty response, parts availability, and service support.
    🏆
    3-year warranty · 5-year service life
    Industry-standard best
Drive Medical's 3-year manufacturer limited warranty covers manufacturing defects and premature failure under normal home use. Expected service life is 5 years under normal use and recommended maintenance. Excludes filters and consumables.
    WHY WE RECOMMEND IT
What makes the 555DS the right pick
    (at a glance)
It's the newest generation of a proven platform:DeVilbiss has been building home oxygen concentrators for decades. The 555DS is what their engineers built when they got to rethink the platform from the ground up. Smaller, lighter, quieter, more energy-efficient — every measurement moved in the right direction, without compromising the OSD reliability or U.S. manufacturing that made the 525DS the best-seller in the first place.
Genuinely compact enough to change how it fits into your home:At 18.4" tall and 9.9" wide, this fits places the 525DS never could. Beside a nightstand. In a corner of a small apartment. Tucked next to a recliner. Not a marketing claim — a real 33% footprint reduction.
The 29.9 lb weight is a genuine caregiver relief:Anyone who has lifted a 36+ lb concentrator up a step or between rooms knows the difference 6-10 pounds makes. Especially for elderly patients living alone — the 555DS is one of the few 5L stationary units they can genuinely reposition without help.
Under 46 dBA changes the sleep experience:The 525DS at 48 dBA is quiet, but the 555DS at under 46 dBA — with a redesigned low and pleasant sound profile that lacks the sharp mechanical "thump" of older compressors — is genuinely bedroom-friendly. Light sleepers notice the difference immediately.
17% lower power consumption adds up over years:On a machine running 24/7 for 3+ years, 17% less electricity is real money — hundreds of dollars over the ownership period. Bonus benefit: lower internal operating temperature extends the life of every internal component.
Modular internal design means easier service:Fewer connections and clamps than any previous DeVilbiss unit. When service is needed (rare, but it happens), the modular layout gets components accessible faster — less downtime for you.
Digital display reduces "is this working?" anxiety:Especially for first-time oxygen therapy patients and elderly users, the clear digital display showing status, flow rate, and alerts at a glance is meaningfully better than the analog gauges + LED indicators on the 525DS.
Made in Somerset, Pennsylvania:Assembled on the same production lines as decades of DeVilbiss respiratory equipment. Faster warranty response and parts availability than overseas-sourced competitors.

    WHAT'S INCLUDED
    555DS package
    (what arrives in the box)
What is included with your purchase:
DeVilbiss 555DS Compact 5L Oxygen Concentrator Unit:Assembled and ready to use — plug in, set the flow rate, attach your cannula, and start therapy
Nasal Cannula:Standard adult nasal cannula included to get you started
Power Cord:Grounded AC power cord for standard 120V home outlets
Owner's Manual:Complete operating instructions, safety information, maintenance schedule, and warranty registration
Additional accessories sold separately The 555DS starter cannula is included, but you'll likely want extension tubing to reach comfortably from the concentrator to where you sit/sleep, a humidifier bottle + distilled water for comfort (especially at higher flow rates), and a pulse oximeter to verify your therapy is working. See the Accessories section below, or call us at (713) 695-4939 and we'll assemble the right starter package for you.
    ESSENTIAL ACCESSORIES
    Recommended add-ons for daily use
    (call for current pricing)
Extension Tubing (Recommended):Flexible tubing that connects to your included starter cannula and extends reach. Available in 7, 14, 25, and 50-foot lengths. The 555DS supports up to 57 feet total — enough to place the machine in one room and use it comfortably in an adjacent room.
Replacement Nasal Cannulas:Should be replaced every 2–4 weeks for hygiene. Stock a few spares so you're never without a fresh one.
Humidifier Bottle (Recommended):Attaches to the 555DS to add humidity to the oxygen stream. Strongly recommended if you're on flow rates above 2 LPM — dry oxygen irritates nasal passages and can cause nosebleeds. Standard bubble humidifier compatible.
Distilled Water (for Humidifier):Only distilled water — NEVER tap water. Tap water leaves mineral deposits that clog the humidifier and can contaminate the oxygen stream. Change daily.
Pulse Oximeter (Highly Recommended):Small clip-on device for your fingertip that reads your blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and heart rate. Essential for anyone on oxygen therapy — lets you verify the therapy is working and know if your levels drop. Under $30 for a good fingertip model.
Replacement Intake Filter:The 555DS has a user-serviceable intake filter. Should be cleaned periodically and replaced as needed. We stock replacements.
Call for a starter package quote: Most first-time oxygen therapy patients need: concentrator + 25 ft extension tubing + humidifier bottle + distilled water + pulse oximeter + spare cannulas. Call (713) 695-4939 and we'll put together a starter package based on your prescription and home layout.

    FAQs
    Common questions before ordering
    (prescription · comparison · usage · coverage)
Do I really need a prescription to buy an oxygen concentrator?
Yes — federal law requires a valid prescription from a licensed physician, pulmonologist, or respiratory therapist to purchase any home oxygen concentrator, including the 555DS. This isn't a bureaucratic hurdle — it's a safety requirement. Oxygen therapy at the wrong flow rate can be dangerous (too low = ineffective; too high = can suppress your breathing drive, especially for COPD patients). Your doctor determines the correct flow rate based on your specific condition, blood oxygen levels, and other factors.

The prescription must specify your flow rate (LPM setting), hours per day of use, and whether oxygen is prescribed for continuous or as-needed use.

How to send us your prescription:
    • Fax: Call (713) 695-4939 for our fax line
    • Email: Have your doctor's office email us the Rx
    • In-store: Bring the paper prescription to our Houston showroom
    • Doctor-direct: Ask your doctor's office to fax/call us on your behalf

Don't have a prescription yet? Talk to your doctor first — never use oxygen therapy without medical supervision. Incorrect flow rates can be dangerous. Call us at (713) 695-4939 and we can walk you through the prescription process.
Should I get the newer 555DS or the established 525DS?
Both are excellent 5L stationary concentrators from the same manufacturer with the same 3-year warranty and same OSD (Oxygen Sensing Device). The differences:

Get the 555DS Compact if you value:
    • Compact size — 33% smaller footprint, fits beside a nightstand
    • Lighter weight — 29.9 lb vs 36 lb, easier for elderly patients to reposition alone
    • Quieter operation — under 46 dBA (vs 48 dBA on 525DS), better for light sleepers
    • Lower electric bill — 17% less power consumption running 24/7
    • Higher purity ceiling — 87–96% (vs 87–93% on 525DS)
    • Modern digital display instead of analog gauges
    • Next-generation modular internal design

Get the 525DS 5L instead if you value:
    • The most established, field-proven platform — millions of patient-hours of home oxygen therapy experience
    • Lower purchase price (usually)
    • A concentrator model you may already be familiar with

Both units serve the same range of prescriptions (0.5–5 LPM). For most new buyers we recommend the 555DS as the modern choice — but the 525DS remains an excellent proven option. Call (713) 695-4939 if you'd like to talk through it.
What if my prescription is above 5 LPM?
The 555DS delivers 0.5 to 5 LPM — the standard range for most home oxygen prescriptions. If your prescription is for flow rates above 5 LPM, you need a 10-liter unit like the DeVilbiss 1025DS 10L. The 1025DS delivers 2–10 LPM continuous flow with higher outlet pressure (20 psi vs the 555DS's standard pressure), which unlocks additional applications like high-pressure oxygen masks, large-volume nebulizers, CPAP/BiPAP with oxygen bleed-in, and hyperbaric oxygen chambers. Talk to your doctor about the right flow rate for your condition, and call (713) 695-4939 if you want to walk through the options with us.
    Can I run the 555DS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week?
Yes — the 555DS is designed for continuous 24/7 operation. That's exactly what a home oxygen concentrator is for. The 3-year manufacturer warranty and 5-year expected service life both assume normal round-the-clock use.

With 17% lower power consumption than the previous generation, running 24/7 costs meaningfully less on your electric bill than older concentrators. Clean the intake filter periodically — that's the main maintenance for round-the-clock operation.
What happens if the power goes out?
The 555DS is not battery-powered — it plugs into a standard 120V outlet (102–132V range). If the power goes out, the concentrator stops producing oxygen and the device malfunction alarm sounds so you know immediately. This is why oxygen-dependent patients should have a backup plan:

    • Register with your utility — most electric utilities have programs for medical-equipment-dependent customers (priority restoration during outages, sometimes free backup generators)
    • Notify your local fire department — many will keep records of oxygen-dependent residents for emergency response
    • Portable oxygen concentrator (POC) — battery-powered units for extended outages
    • Backup generator — sized appropriately for your concentrator's power draw

Call (713) 695-4939 to discuss backup oxygen options for your situation.
Do I need a humidifier bottle?
    Strongly recommended, especially if:

    • Your prescribed flow rate is above 2 LPM (dry oxygen at higher flows irritates nasal passages)
    • You experience nose dryness, nosebleeds, or crusting since starting oxygen
    • You live in a dry climate or use central heating in winter (both dry the air further)
    • You'll be on oxygen for extended daily use

The 555DS is compatible with standard bubble humidifiers. Only use distilled water in the humidifier — never tap water (tap water leaves mineral deposits that clog the bottle and can contaminate the oxygen stream). Change the water daily and clean the bottle weekly. Call us for humidifier bottle options and pricing.
Is the 555DS covered by Medicare or insurance?
Yes. Home oxygen therapy is a covered benefit under Medicare Part B with proper documentation — the 555DS carries HCPCS code E1390 (Oxygen concentrator, single delivery port, capable of delivering ≥85% oxygen). Medicare typically covers oxygen therapy as a monthly rental payment (about 36 months) with documented medical necessity, including:

    • Doctor's prescription specifying flow rate and hours per day
    • Blood oxygen test results (arterial blood gas or overnight pulse oximetry) documenting SpO₂ ≤88% or PaO₂ ≤55 mmHg
    • Diagnosis supporting long-term oxygen therapy (COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, CHF with hypoxemia, etc.)

Coverage typically runs 80% (Medicare Part B), with the remaining 20% subject to your deductible and any secondary insurance. Medicaid and most private insurers also cover oxygen therapy. Call (713) 695-4939 and we'll help you understand what your specific plan requires and how to submit documentation.
How quiet is "under 46 dBA" really?
    Here's a reference chart:

    • 30 dB — whisper
    • 40 dB — quiet library, refrigerator hum
    • <46 dB — the 555DS
    • 48 dB — the older 525DS
    • 50 dB — typical office background noise
    • 60 dB — normal conversation
    • 70 dB — vacuum cleaner, older oxygen concentrators

At under 46 dBA — with a low and pleasant sound profile that lacks the sharp mechanical "thump" of older compressors — the 555DS is genuinely bedroom-friendly. Most patients can sleep next to it without noticing. Light sleepers who couldn't tolerate the 525DS often find the 555DS acceptable. If you're extremely sound-sensitive, consider placing the concentrator in an adjacent room and using longer oxygen tubing (up to 57 feet total) to reach your bed.
What accessories do I need to actually use it?
Good news — the 555DS includes a starter nasal cannula in the box. But you'll likely want a few additional accessories:

    Recommended:

    • Extension tubing — to reach from the concentrator to where you sit/sleep (7–50 ft depending on layout; up to 57 ft total supported)
    • Humidifier bottle + distilled water (especially at flow rates above 2 LPM)
    • Pulse oximeter — essential for anyone on oxygen therapy, lets you verify SpO₂ is staying in the target range
    • Spare nasal cannulas — replace every 2–4 weeks for hygiene

Call (713) 695-4939 and we'll build a starter package with everything you need based on your prescription and home layout. Most patients spend $50–$100 on the initial accessories starter kit.
How do I know it's working correctly?
Three ways to verify the 555DS is working correctly:

    • OSD (Oxygen Sensing Device) — built into the concentrator, continuously monitors purity. If oxygen output drops below safe levels, an audible and visual alarm sounds. No alarms = you're getting proper concentration.
    • Digital display — shows current flow rate, status, and any active alerts at a glance. Easier to check than analog gauges on older units.
    • Pulse oximeter — clip on your finger, read your SpO₂ (blood oxygen saturation) and heart rate. Your doctor will tell you your target range (typically 88–95%). If your SpO₂ is in range on your prescribed flow rate, the therapy is working.
    • How you feel — within days of starting properly-prescribed oxygen therapy, most patients report improved energy, better sleep, less shortness of breath during daily activities, and clearer thinking. If you don't feel better after the first week, talk to your doctor — the flow rate may need adjustment.

Also do the basics: keep the intake filter clean, verify the flow meter shows the prescribed setting, verify the humidifier bottle water is fresh, and inspect the cannula for kinks or damage.
