BREG POLAR CARE CUBE WRAPON ANKLE PAD OVERVIEW If you've just had ankle surgery ligament repair ATFL, CFL, or high ankle syndesmosis, Achilles tendon reconstruction, ankle fracture ORIF, arthroscopic debridement, or ankle fusion or you're dealing with a severe ankle sprain, you're facing something that sounds simple but isn't weeks of non-weight-bearing recovery with an ankle that swells if you look at it wrong. And the traditional cold therapy protocol your surgeon prescribed ice, elevation, repeat turns out to be one of the hardest things to actually maintain at home. Here's why the ankle is uniquely difficult it's not a flat joint. You have the medial malleolus, the lateral malleolus, the top of the foot, the back of the heel, and the Achilles tendon a whole geometry of bony prominences and soft tissue that a flat ice pack can't cover evenly. Ice packs slide off the sides. Frozen peas don't wrap around the ankle joint. Gel packs freeze one spot solid while missing others. And when you're supposed to be elevating the ankle above heart level for hours the E in RICE protocol, an ice pack falling off every five minutes means constant repositioning that undermines the whole point. That's what the Breg Polar Care Cube system was designed to solve and this WrapOn Ankle Pad is the piece that actually contours to your ankle. The Polar Care Cube unit sold separately circulates continuous chilled water through the pad using a quiet motorized pump. The pad's elastic strap design wraps around the ankle joint over the top of the foot, around the malleoli, up the lower calf and the elastic itself provides static compression the C in RICE while holding the pad firmly in place. Works on either the left or right ankle. Compatible with elevation. Stays on while you sleep with your foot propped up. Even fits under most walking boots between therapy sessions. What you're really buying isn't just a pad. It's the ability to actually follow the RICE protocol your surgeon prescribed. It's hours of continuous cold and compression while your ankle is elevated on pillows. It's controlled overnight swelling instead of waking up to a puffy, painful ankle. Manufactured by Breg the same trusted brand used in orthopedic surgery centers and PT clinics nationwide. You're Viewing Polar Care Cube Ankle Pad Elastic Wrap One Size Fits Most Model 04730 Breg Important Pad Only The Polar Care Cube therapy unit is sold separately This listing is for the ankle pad only. To use it, you also need a compatible motorized cold compression unit the Polar Care Cube, Polar Care Glacier, or Polar Care Cub. This pad is NOT compatible with Polar Care Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE systems different hose connections. If you don't already have a compatible unit, call 713 695-4939 and we'll set you up with the complete system. WHO IT'S FOR This ankle pad really shines for ATFL / CFL ligament repair recovery Achilles tendon repair Ankle fracture ORIF malleolar Ankle arthroscopy Ankle fusion recovery Severe ankle sprains Grade II / III High ankle sprains syndesmotic Sports injury rehabilitation Non-weight-bearing patients Post-op walking boot wearers Chronic ankle inflammation AT A GLANCE The basicswhat matters most Target Joint Fit Pad Size Compatible Systems Requires Ankleleft or right One SizeFits most 8. 25" 9. 75"21 25 cm Cube Glacier CubBreg only Unit not includedsold separately Elastic Wrap Static Compression Conforms to bony ankle contours One-size-fits-most Left or right foot Unlike the knee and shoulder WrapOn pads which use adjustable loop-and-hook straps, the ankle pad uses elastic straps that provide static compression the "C" in the RICE protocol your surgeon prescribed. The elastic wraps around the bony malleoli and over the top of the foot, contouring to your specific ankle shape while holding the pad firmly in place. Works on either left or right ankle no need to specify which side. One-size-fits-most eliminates the sizing guesswork common with other pads. And because the strap system relies on elastic stretch not adjustable tension, it accommodates the natural swelling changes that happen throughout ankle recovery without needing to be re-tightened. Medical Grade Breg trusted by orthopedic surgeons The Polar Care Cube system is manufactured by Breg, one of the most trusted names in orthopedic recovery. Their cold therapy systems are used in surgical recovery protocols nationwide hospitals, orthopedic surgery centers, and physical therapy clinics rely on Breg equipment for post-op patients. The WrapOn ankle pad is built to the same medical-grade durability standards reinforced water channels, medical-grade fabric, easy-clean surface, and designed to last through months of recovery use. COLD COMPRESSION THAT ACTUALLY WRAPS AROUND YOUR ANKLE The ankle is one of the most difficult joints to ice properly. Between the medial and lateral malleoli, the Achilles tendon, the top of the foot, and the geometry that changes when the foot flexes a traditional flat ice pack can only touch one small area at a time, and it slides off constantly. The result patients who are prescribed 4 hours a day of ice therapy end up doing 20 minutes of frustrated, unevenly-applied cold before giving up. That's not compliance. It's not therapy. And it's not going to give you the swelling control your recovery needs. The WrapOn Ankle Pad attaches to the Polar Care Cube unit or compatible Glacier or Cub, sold separately via an insulated hose. Ice water circulates through the pad's internal channels, delivering continuous cold at a therapeutic temperature the unit maintains automatically. The pad's elastic wrap design conforms around the bony ankle contours the medial and lateral malleoli, over the top of the foot, up the lower calf so cold coverage reaches the actual surgical or injured tissue on all sides. The elastic itself provides static compression, delivering the "C" component of the RICE protocol simultaneously with the cold. Refilling the unit's reservoir with ice takes 30 seconds and typically lasts 46 hours of continuous therapy. For patients recovering from ATFL or CFL ligament repair, Achilles tendon reconstruction, malleolar fracture ORIF, ankle arthroscopy, or ankle fusion, this is the difference between actually following the RICE protocol and giving up on it. Between an ankle that arrives at your post-op appointment with controlled swelling and one that arrives puffy, painful, and stiff. It's also excellent for severe ankle sprains Grade II/III, high ankle sprains syndesmotic injuries, and any chronic ankle inflammation requiring prolonged cold therapy. A great fit for You're recovering from ankle surgery ligament repair, Achilles reconstruction, fracture ORIF, arthroscopy, fusion and your surgeon has prescribed the RICE protocol Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation You already own a compatible unit Polar Care Cube, Glacier, or Cub or you're purchasing the complete system and need the ankle-specific pad You'll be non-weight-bearing for weeks and need cold therapy that works while you're elevating your ankle on pillows or a recliner You're dealing with a severe ankle sprain Grade II or III or high ankle sprain that requires days of consistent cold and compression You'll be wearing a walking boot or CAM boot between therapy sessions and need cold therapy that fits your bootless downtime You want elastic wrap compression that adjusts naturally to swelling changes without constant re-tightening You have a family history or personal history of recurring ankle problems and want a durable system available for future flare-ups You value Breg's medical-grade construction and reputation in orthopedic recovery equipment KEY FEATURES What you'll noticein daily use FeatureWhat it really means for you Anatomically wraps the ankleContours to bony prominencesThe ankle isn't flat. The medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, Achilles tendon, and top of the foot create a challenging geometry for cold therapy. The WrapOn design contours around all of it, so cold reaches the actual injured or surgical tissue not just one spot. Elastic strap systemStatic compression built inDifferent from the knee and shoulder pads this one uses elastic straps that stretch to secure the pad AND deliver static compression at the same time. That's the "C" of your RICE protocol, delivered automatically without a separate ace wrap. The elastic accommodates swelling changes without needing to be re-tightened. Fits left OR right ankleNo need to specify sideThe pad is versatile enough to work on either ankle. Useful if you're not sure which side you'll need it for, if you end up needing it for the other ankle later, or if you're buying for a family member and don't know which ankle they'll injure next. One size fits most adults8. 25" 9. 75" pad sizeThe elastic strap design means you don't need specific circumference measurements. The pad fits the typical adult ankle range comfortably. If you've just had ankle surgery — ligament repair (ATFL, CFL, or high ankle syndesmosis), Achilles tendon reconstruction, ankle fracture ORIF, arthroscopic debridement, or ankle fusion — or you're dealing with a severe ankle sprain, you're facing something that sounds simple but isn't: weeks of non-weight-bearing recovery with an ankle that swells if you look at it wrong. And the traditional cold therapy protocol your surgeon prescribed — ice, elevation, repeat — turns out to be one of the hardest things to actually maintain at home.

Here's why the ankle is uniquely difficult: it's not a flat joint. You have the medial malleolus, the lateral malleolus, the top of the foot, the back of the heel, and the Achilles tendon — a whole geometry of bony prominences and soft tissue that a flat ice pack can't cover evenly. Ice packs slide off the sides. Frozen peas don't wrap around the ankle joint. Gel packs freeze one spot solid while missing others. And when you're supposed to be elevating the ankle above heart level for hours (the E in RICE protocol), an ice pack falling off every five minutes means constant repositioning that undermines the whole point.

That's what the Breg Polar Care Cube system was designed to solve — and this WrapOn Ankle Pad is the piece that actually contours to your ankle. The Polar Care Cube unit (sold separately) circulates continuous chilled water through the pad using a quiet motorized pump. The pad's elastic strap design wraps around the ankle joint — over the top of the foot, around the malleoli, up the lower calf — and the elastic itself provides static compression (the C in RICE) while holding the pad firmly in place.

Manufactured by Breg — the same trusted brand used in orthopedic surgery centers and PT clinics nationwide.

⚠️ Important — Pad Only The Polar Care Cube therapy unit is sold separately
This listing is for the ankle pad only. To use it, you also need a compatible motorized cold compression unit — the Polar Care Cube, Polar Care Glacier, or Polar Care Cub. This pad is NOT compatible with Polar Care Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE systems (different hose connections). If you don't already have a compatible unit, call (713) 695-4939 and we'll set you up with the complete system.

Elastic Wrap = Static Compression Conforms to bony ankle contours · One-size-fits-most · Left or right foot
Unlike the knee and shoulder WrapOn pads (which use adjustable loop-and-hook straps), the ankle pad uses elastic straps that provide static compression — the "C" in the RICE protocol your surgeon prescribed. The elastic wraps around the bony malleoli and over the top of the foot, contouring to your specific ankle shape while holding the pad firmly in place. Works on either left or right ankle — no need to specify which side. One-size-fits-most eliminates the sizing guesswork common with other pads. And because the strap system relies on elastic stretch (not adjustable tension), it accommodates the natural swelling changes that happen throughout ankle recovery without needing to be re-tightened.
🏥 Medical Grade Breg — trusted by orthopedic surgeons
The Polar Care Cube system is manufactured by Breg, one of the most trusted names in orthopedic recovery. Their cold therapy systems are used in surgical recovery protocols nationwide — hospitals, orthopedic surgery centers, and physical therapy clinics rely on Breg equipment for post-op patients. The WrapOn ankle pad is built to the same medical-grade durability standards: reinforced water channels, medical-grade fabric, easy-clean surface, and designed to last through months of recovery use.

COLD COMPRESSION THAT ACTUALLY WRAPS AROUND YOUR ANKLE

The ankle is one of the most difficult joints to ice properly. Between the medial and lateral malleoli, the Achilles tendon, the top of the foot, and the geometry that changes when the foot flexes — a traditional flat ice pack can only touch one small area at a time, and it slides off constantly. The result: patients who are prescribed 4+ hours a day of ice therapy end up doing 20 minutes of frustrated, unevenly-applied cold before giving up. That's not compliance. It's not therapy. And it's not going to give you the swelling control your recovery needs.

The WrapOn Ankle Pad attaches to the Polar Care Cube unit (or compatible Glacier or Cub, sold separately) via an insulated hose. Ice water circulates through the pad's internal channels, delivering continuous cold at a therapeutic temperature the unit maintains automatically. The pad's elastic wrap design conforms around the bony ankle contours — the medial and lateral malleoli, over the top of the foot, up the lower calf — so cold coverage reaches the actual surgical or injured tissue on all sides. The elastic itself provides static compression, delivering the "C" component of the RICE protocol simultaneously with the cold. Refilling the unit's reservoir with ice takes 30 seconds and typically lasts 4–6 hours of continuous therapy.

It's also excellent for severe ankle sprains (Grade II/III), high ankle sprains (syndesmotic injuries), and any chronic ankle inflammation requiring prolonged cold therapy.

    A great fit for:
    • You're recovering from ankle surgery (ligament repair, Achilles reconstruction, fracture ORIF, arthroscopy, fusion) and your surgeon has prescribed the RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)
    • You already own a compatible unit (Polar Care Cube, Glacier, or Cub) — or you're purchasing the complete system and need the ankle-specific pad
    • You'll be non-weight-bearing for weeks and need cold therapy that works while you're elevating your ankle on pillows or a recliner
    • You're dealing with a severe ankle sprain (Grade II or III) or high ankle sprain that requires days of consistent cold and compression
    • You'll be wearing a walking boot or CAM boot between therapy sessions and need cold therapy that fits your bootless downtime
    • You want elastic wrap compression that adjusts naturally to swelling changes without constant re-tightening
    • You have a family history or personal history of recurring ankle problems and want a durable system available for future flare-ups
    • You value Breg's medical-grade construction and reputation in orthopedic recovery equipment
    QUESTIONS BEFORE ORDERING?
Not sure if this pad is compatible with your unit? Call us at (713) 695-4939. The most common ordering mistake is buying pads for the wrong Breg system — this pad works with the Polar Care Cube, Glacier, or Cub but NOT with the Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE. We'll verify your unit's hose connection, help you decide if you need the Sterile Polar Dressing skin barrier, and — if you don't have a compatible unit — put together a complete system quote. Post-op ankle patients are our specialty.

    KEY FEATURES
    What you'll notice
    (in daily use)
FeatureWhat it really means for you
    🎯
    Anatomically wraps the ankle
    Contours to bony prominences
The ankle isn't flat. The medial malleolus, lateral malleolus, Achilles tendon, and top of the foot create a challenging geometry for cold therapy. The WrapOn design contours around all of it, so cold reaches the actual injured or surgical tissue — not just one spot.
    🔗
    Elastic strap system
    Static compression built in
Different from the knee and shoulder pads — this one uses elastic straps that stretch to secure the pad AND deliver static compression at the same time. That's the "C" of your RICE protocol, delivered automatically without a separate ace wrap. The elastic accommodates swelling changes without needing to be re-tightened.
    ↔️
    Fits left OR right ankle
    No need to specify side
The pad is versatile enough to work on either ankle. Useful if you're not sure which side you'll need it for, if you end up needing it for the other ankle later, or if you're buying for a family member and don't know which ankle they'll injure next.
    📏
    One size fits most adults
    8.25" × 9.75" pad size
The elastic strap design means you don't need specific circumference measurements. The pad fits the typical adult ankle range comfortably. Larger or smaller feet may need to check the size chart before ordering — call us to verify if you're unsure.
    🦶
    Elevation-compatible
    Works with foot on pillows
The pad stays in place while your ankle is elevated above heart level (the E in RICE). Whether you're propped up on pillows on the couch, elevated in a recliner, or lying in bed with the foot of the mattress raised, the elastic wrap keeps cold coverage where you need it.
    ❄️
    Continuous cold circulation
    Consistent therapeutic temperature
Chilled water from the Polar Care Cube (or Glacier/Cub) unit circulates through internal pad channels, maintaining a consistent therapeutic temperature. No warm spots. No frostbite risk from direct ice contact. Hours of continuous therapy per fill.
    💧
    Sealed water channels
    Dry outer surface
Water stays inside the sealed internal channels of the pad. The outer surface is dry against skin — no dripping condensation soaking your bedding, boot padding, or clothing.
    🧼
    Durable and washable
    Reusable through months of recovery
Medical-grade fabric holds up to daily use. Wipe clean with a mild disinfectant between sessions. Designed to last the entire recovery period and beyond.
    🌙
    Sleep-friendly design
    Wear it overnight safely
Delivers continuous cold at a controlled temperature, safe for overnight wear. Post-op ankle patients often use overnight therapy for the first several nights with the foot elevated on pillows.
    🔌
Cube / Glacier / Cub compatible
NOT for Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE
Works with three Breg systems: Polar Care Cube (most common home unit), Polar Care Glacier (clinic-grade), and Polar Care Cub. Does NOT work with Breg Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE systems — those use different hose connections. Verify your unit before ordering.
    🩹
    Sterile dressing recommended
    Breg 09810 skin barrier
Breg recommends using a Sterile Polar Dressing (part 09810) as a water-impermeable skin barrier between the pad and your skin. Especially important for post-surgical patients with incisions in the treatment area. Sold separately — call us for availability.

    WHY WE RECOMMEND IT
What makes this the right pick for ankle recovery
    (at a glance)
The ankle is uniquely difficult to ice properly, and this pad was purpose-built for it:Between the medial and lateral malleoli, the Achilles, and the top of the foot, the ankle has a geometry that traditional ice packs simply can't cover. Patients try, get frustrated, and end up doing 20 minutes of ineffective ice before giving up. The WrapOn ankle pad's contoured design and elastic wrap solve exactly this problem.
The elastic wrap delivers static compression — the C in RICE — automatically:Your surgeon prescribed RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. With traditional ice packs, you have to remember to also use an ace wrap for compression, which usually gets skipped. The WrapOn ankle pad's elastic wrap provides gentle compression built-in, so you're getting both the cold and the compression without extra steps.
Elevation compatibility is the whole game for ankle recovery:Ankle patients need to elevate the foot above heart level for hours per day. Traditional ice packs fall off the moment you elevate. The WrapOn pad stays on because it's wrapped around the ankle, not just placed on it. That means you can actually follow the E in RICE without constantly restarting the ice therapy.
Overnight coverage is critical — and this delivers it:Post-op ankles swell overnight without cold therapy. Traditional ice therapy requires re-freezing every 20 minutes, which is impossible when you're supposed to be sleeping with your foot elevated. The Polar Care Cube system runs 4–6 hours per ice fill, letting you actually sleep. That's the difference between an ankle that shows up to PT calm and one that shows up puffy and stiff.
One-size-fits-most eliminates sizing anxiety:Unlike the knee and shoulder pads that require specific circumference measurements, the ankle pad's elastic design fits most adults without measurement. Great for gift-purchases, family use, and situations where you're not sure of the exact size needed.
Works on either foot — versatile for future needs:The pad works on the left or right ankle. Doesn't matter which side is injured now, and doesn't matter if you injure the other one later. Same pad works for both.
Compatible with Cube, Glacier, and Cub — but verify your unit:This pad works with three Breg systems, giving you flexibility. But it's specifically NOT compatible with the Breg Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE due to different hose connections — verify your unit before ordering (call us if unsure).
Breg's clinical reputation matters:Breg cold therapy systems are used in orthopedic surgery centers, hospital post-op units, and PT clinics nationwide. Surgeons recommend Breg by name because it works. For equipment that's going to affect surgical recovery, going with the trusted clinical standard is smart.

    SIZING GUIDE
    One-size-fits-most
(no measurement needed for typical adults)
Good news — no measurement required for most adults:Unlike the knee and shoulder pads that need specific circumference measurements, the WrapOn ankle pad uses an elastic strap design that fits the typical adult ankle without measurement. If you're a typical adult, this pad will fit.
Fits either left or right ankle:The pad's contoured shape works on both feet — no need to specify which ankle you're treating. This is especially useful if you're not sure which ankle will need cold therapy or if you might need it on the other side down the road.
When you might want to verify sizing:Adults with very small feet (women's shoe size 5 and below) or very large feet (men's shoe size 14+) may benefit from calling us to verify the fit works for their specific anatomy. Pediatric use — call for guidance on whether this or a different sized pad is appropriate.
Post-surgical swelling accommodates automatically:The elastic strap design accommodates the natural swelling changes that happen throughout ankle recovery. You won't need to constantly re-adjust the fit as swelling goes up and down over the recovery period.
Not sure? Call us:Call (713) 695-4939 if you have any questions about fit before ordering. We help ankle patients set up cold therapy every week.
    COMPLETE SYSTEM & ACCESSORIES
What else you may need for ankle recovery
    (call for current pricing)
Motorized Cold Therapy Unit (REQUIRED):Compatible options — Polar Care Cube (most common home unit), Polar Care Glacier (clinic-grade with digital controls), or Polar Care Cub (compact travel unit). Call (713) 695-4939 for current pricing and availability.
Sterile Polar Dressing — Breg 09810 (RECOMMENDED for post-op):Water-impermeable skin barrier that Breg recommends between the pad and your skin, especially over surgical incisions. Not strictly required but strongly recommended for post-surgical use. Sold separately.
Other Joint Pads for Polar Care Cube:The same Cube/Glacier/Cub unit works with knee, shoulder, hip, back, and universal pads. Good to know for future joint issues in your family.
Ice for the Reservoir:The Polar Care Cube unit uses standard household ice. Keep a bag or two in the freezer during recovery — a full reservoir typically runs 4–6 hours.
Elevation Wedge or Pillows:Ankle recovery requires elevation above heart level for hours per day. A firm elevation wedge (or a stack of pillows) makes overnight and daytime elevation much more manageable. We stock elevation wedges — call for options.
Walking Boot / CAM Boot (if prescribed):Many ankle surgery patients wear a CAM walker boot for weeks post-op. The WrapOn ankle pad is used during downtime OUT of the boot (not simultaneously). We stock walking boots — call for sizing and options.
Crutches or Knee Scooter:Non-weight-bearing ankle recovery requires mobility aids. Crutches are traditional but exhausting; knee scooters are much easier on the arms and shoulders. We stock both.
Building a complete post-op ankle recovery kit? Most patients recovering from ankle surgery also need: a Polar Care Cube unit, Sterile Polar Dressings, a walking boot or CAM boot, crutches or knee scooter, elevation wedge/pillows, and ice for the Cube reservoir. Call (713) 695-4939 and we can put together a complete post-op package based on your surgeon's specific protocol.

    FAQs
    Common questions before ordering
    (compatibility · elevation · boots · insurance)
Do I really need the Polar Care Cube unit to use this pad?
Yes. This listing is for the ankle pad only. The pad requires a compatible motorized cold compression unit — the Polar Care Cube, Polar Care Glacier, or Polar Care Cub. The unit is what circulates chilled water through the pad; without it, the pad is just an unfilled wrap.

Which unit should I choose if I don't have one?
    • Polar Care Cube — Most common home unit. Great for the vast majority of post-op patients.
    • Polar Care Glacier — Larger reservoir (longer runtime), digital controls. Common in clinical settings.
    • Polar Care Cub — Compact, portable. Good for travel or space-constrained homes.

Call (713) 695-4939 and we'll help you pick the right unit for your situation.
Is this compatible with my Breg unit?
    Compatible with these Breg systems:
    ✓ Polar Care Cube
    ✓ Polar Care Glacier
    ✓ Polar Care Cub

NOT compatible with these Breg systems (they use different hose connections):
    ✗ Polar Care Kodiak
    ✗ Polar Care Wave
    ✗ Breg VPULSE

If you have a Kodiak, Wave, or VPULSE system, you need a different ankle pad specifically designed for that unit. Call (713) 695-4939 and we can help you find the right pad for your existing system.

How to check your unit: The model name is usually printed on the front of the unit or on a sticker on the back. If you're not sure, call us and describe your unit — we can usually identify it over the phone.
    Will this fit my ankle?
Yes — the ankle pad is one-size-fits-most for typical adult ankles. Unlike the knee and shoulder pads that require specific circumference measurements, the WrapOn ankle pad uses an elastic strap design that fits the typical adult ankle without measurement.

You may want to verify fit if:
    • You have very small feet (women's shoe size 5 and below) — the pad may be larger than needed
    • You have very large feet (men's shoe size 14+) — the elastic wrap may be tight
    • You're buying for a pediatric patient — call for guidance on appropriate sizing

Fits either left or right ankle — no need to specify which side.

Call (713) 695-4939 if you have any concerns about sizing before ordering.
Do I need the Sterile Polar Dressing (Breg 09810)?
Strongly recommended for post-surgical use, and Breg's official recommendation for all use. The Sterile Polar Dressing (Breg part 09810) is a water-impermeable barrier that sits between the pad and your skin.

    Why Breg recommends it:
    • Creates a hygienic barrier over surgical incisions
    • Prevents direct contact between the pad's fabric and healing tissue
    • Reduces the chance of skin irritation from prolonged cold contact
    • Easy to change between sessions (unlike the pad itself which is reusable)

    When it's essential:
    • Post-op patients with fresh incisions
    • Patients with sensitive skin or history of contact irritation
    • Extended overnight wear

    When you might skip it:
    • Non-surgical injuries with intact skin
    • Short-duration therapy sessions
    • Chronic condition management (e.g., arthritis flare-ups)

The dressings are sold separately — call (713) 695-4939 for pricing and availability.
Can I use this while my ankle is elevated?
Yes — that's actually the intended use. The RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) that your surgeon prescribed is best delivered when your ankle is elevated above heart level, and this pad is designed to stay in place during elevation.

    How to elevate properly:
    • Prop your foot up on 2–3 firm pillows, an elevation wedge, or the elevated footrest of a recliner
    • Position so your ankle is above the level of your heart (higher = better for swelling drainage)
    • Sustain for as long as your surgeon prescribed (often 30-45 minutes at a time, multiple times per day, plus overnight)

    Setup for elevated cold therapy:
    • Place the Polar Care Cube unit on the floor or a low table beside you
    • Apply the pad on your elevated ankle
    • Connect the hose from the unit to the pad
    • The elastic wrap keeps the pad in place even with your foot up

This is the biggest advantage over traditional ice packs — you can actually elevate AND ice at the same time without the ice falling off.
Can I use this with a walking boot or CAM boot?
Not simultaneously — you use the pad during downtime out of the boot, not inside it.

Typical usage pattern for boot wearers:
    • Wear the walking/CAM boot when you're up and about (per surgeon's protocol)
    • When you take the boot off for rest, elevation, or sleep — that's when you use the ankle pad
    • Apply the pad, connect to the Cube unit, elevate the ankle, and let cold therapy run for 20 min – 6 hours (per your protocol)
    • When you need to be up and moving again, remove the pad and put the boot back on

    Post-op ankle patients typically:
    • Wear the boot for weight-bearing activities (walking, bathroom trips)
    • Remove the boot for elevation + cold therapy sessions (typically 4-6+ hours per day early in recovery)
    • Use the pad overnight while the boot is off

Follow your surgeon's specific instructions on when to have the boot on vs. off.
Can I use this for Achilles / ATFL / ankle fracture recovery?
Yes — those are the exact scenarios this system is designed for. Orthopedic surgeons routinely recommend motorized cold compression for:

    • ATFL (anterior talofibular ligament) reconstruction — Most common ankle ligament surgery
    • CFL (calcaneofibular ligament) repair
    • Broström procedure (lateral ligament reconstruction)
    • Achilles tendon repair (open or percutaneous)
    • Malleolar fracture ORIF (medial, lateral, or bimalleolar)
    • Trimalleolar fracture ORIF
    • Ankle arthroscopy (any type)
    • Ankle debridement
    • Ankle fusion (arthrodesis)
    • Total ankle replacement
    • High ankle sprain (syndesmotic injury) recovery
    • Severe Grade II/III ankle sprains

Your surgeon will provide specific guidance on when to start, session length, and duration of use.
How long should I use cold therapy per session?
Follow your surgeon's or physical therapist's specific protocol. General guidance for ankle:

    • Post-op ankle surgery (first 72 hours): Often 20-minute sessions with 20-minute breaks, up to 6 hours total per day. Many protocols allow continuous overnight use with elevation.
    • Post-op recovery (days 4-14): Typically 3–4 sessions of 20–30 minutes per day, especially before and after PT sessions.
    • Post-op weeks 3+: Reduced frequency as swelling decreases — typically after PT or as needed for flare-ups.
    • Acute ankle sprain (Grade II/III): 15–20 minute sessions, 3–5 times per day for the first 48–72 hours, always with elevation.
    • Chronic conditions: 20 minutes as directed, often before physical activity or PT.

Stop or reduce cold therapy if: Numbness that doesn't resolve within a few minutes of removing the pad, skin turning white or bluish, pain that increases during the session, or any signs of frostbite.
Is this covered by insurance, HSA, or FSA?
HSA / FSA: Yes — cold therapy equipment for post-surgical recovery is a qualified medical expense under both Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts. Pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout or submit for reimbursement with your receipt.

Insurance coverage: Varies widely by carrier and plan. Some insurance plans cover cold therapy units and pads as durable medical equipment (DME) with a physician's prescription and documented medical necessity. Others consider it comfort/convenience and don't cover it.

    To pursue insurance coverage:
    • Get a prescription from your surgeon specifying "motorized cold compression therapy for post-operative ankle recovery"
    • Check with your insurance about DME coverage under HCPCS code E0218 (water circulating cold pad with pump)
    • Call (713) 695-4939 and we can help you understand what your plan requires

Ankle recovery timelines are often 6-12 weeks or longer, so purchase often makes more sense than rental for extended recovery periods.
How do I clean and reuse the pad?
The WrapOn ankle pad is designed for repeated use throughout your recovery period and beyond:

    • Between sessions: Wipe the outside of the pad with a soft cloth to remove any moisture.
    • Daily cleaning: Wipe the outer fabric with a mild disinfectant (isopropyl alcohol or a diluted household disinfectant works well). Let air dry before next use.
    • Never submerge or machine-wash the pad. The sealed internal water channels are designed for controlled circulation, not immersion cleaning.
    • Never use bleach or harsh chemicals that could degrade the pad material or elastic straps.
    • Storage between recovery periods: Store flat in a cool, dry place. Don't compress the elastic straps under heavy items for extended periods.

Elastic strap care: The elastic straps are the wear-item most likely to degrade over years of use. If they lose their stretch and no longer hold the pad securely, replacement is time. This is normal after extensive long-term use.
What if I have surgery on both ankles?
Bilateral ankle surgery is uncommon but does happen (usually staged rather than simultaneous). Options:

    • Two separate pads and alternate: Buy two ankle pads and rotate cold therapy between ankles — 20 minutes on the left, then switch to the right. Works well when your surgeon's protocol allows sequential therapy.
    • One pad and switch between ankles: Cheaper but requires more active involvement. Disconnect the pad, re-wrap on the other ankle, reconnect.
    • Time your surgeries to avoid overlap: Most surgeons stage bilateral ankle procedures 3–6 months apart specifically because bilateral non-weight-bearing recovery is extremely difficult.

Call (713) 695-4939 if you're planning bilateral ankle surgery and we can talk through the best setup.
When should I NOT use cold therapy?
Cold therapy is generally very safe, but there are situations where you should consult your doctor before use:

    • Reduced circulation conditions (Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes with reduced sensation — especially important for foot/ankle since diabetic neuropathy commonly affects this area)
    • Cold hypersensitivity or cold urticaria
    • Nerve damage or numbness in the treatment area (you may not feel warning signs of over-cooling)
    • Open wounds that haven't yet closed (unless specifically directed by your surgeon)
    • Cryoglobulinemia
    • Rheumatoid arthritis — some patients respond poorly to cold; consult your rheumatologist
    • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) history — consult vascular medicine before cold therapy in the affected extremity

Stop use if you experience: Increased pain during the session (rather than decreased), skin turning white or bluish, numbness that persists after removing the pad, blistering, or any allergic reaction.

Always follow your medical provider's specific guidance. When in doubt, call your surgeon's office.

About this product — Quick answers
