Golden Straight Lift Explained: The Safer Way to Stand Up (Full Lift vs Mid Lift vs Straight Lift)

Can I tell you the thing nobody warns you about with lift chairs? Standing up is only half the battle. Most power recliners lift you by tilting you forward — which is fine if your knees, hips, and balance are solid. But if you are recovering from surgery, dealing with a bad back, or helping a loved one who is unsteady on their feet, that forward tip can feel like being gently shoved out of the chair. It is the exact moment a lot of falls happen.

This is where Golden Technologies did something genuinely different. It is called Straight Lift, and it is a feature you will not find on any other recliner. Instead of tipping you forward, the chair rises straight up — keeping you level, stable, and in control the whole way to standing. For the right person, it is the difference between dreading every transfer and doing it confidently on their own.

Here is the best part: this is not an expensive add-on or a separate model. Straight Lift comes built into every Golden lift chair, and you (or a caregiver) can switch the chair into Straight Lift mode at home in about five minutes with a single pin. Let me walk you through what it is, who it is for, and how to set it up — friend to friend, the way I would explain it in our Houston showroom.

Golden power lift recliner with customizable Straight Lift support

What is Straight Lift, exactly?

Straight Lift positioning was designed for one job: safer transfers. A standard lift chair lifts and tilts forward at the same time, which nudges you out toward your toes. Straight Lift removes the tilt — the seat travels vertically, raising you straight upward so your weight stays centered over your feet. That vertical motion helps you keep your stability and control through the whole movement, giving you a far more secure transition into — or out of — a standing or seated position.

It sounds like a small change. In practice it is enormous. Staying level means you are not fighting momentum, you are not pitched forward onto weak knees, and a caregiver assisting you is not bracing against a moving target. Everyone stays balanced.

Who needs it — and why?

STRAIGHT LIFT™

Because Straight Lift is available on all Golden chairs, it quietly supports greater independence and confidence for anyone with mobility challenges — while promoting joint health, safety, and overall wellness through smoother, more natural transitions. It tends to matter most for:

If this sounds like you or your loved one…Why Straight Lift helps
Recovering from abdominal, hip, or knee surgeryAvoids the forward bend and pressure a tilting lift puts on healing joints and incisions.
Transfers to or from a wheelchair (power or manual)A level rise lines you up for a smooth side transfer instead of pitching you forward.
Has a caregiver assisting with standingKeeps you balanced and predictable so a helper can support you safely.
Lives with chronic back painEliminates the forward tilt that can aggravate the lower back during transfers.
Is a taller userLets you raise the seat height for a more comfortable, upright starting point.

The 3 types of safety transfers

Golden chairs do not lock you into one lifting style. Depending on the model, you can set the chair to one of three transfer modes — and switch between them at home as needs change. Think of it as choosing how much help you want the chair to give you when you stand.

1. Full Lift — maximum standing assistance

FULL LIFT · 21° TILTFULL LIFT

Full Lift gently raises you to a full standing position, tilting forward up to 21° to give you the most help getting onto your feet. It adds extra support for those with limited mobility, and it is ideal during recovery from abdominal, hip, or knee surgery, or for managing ongoing mobility challenges. This is the chair’s standard, most-assistive setting — the one most people start with.

2. Mid Lift — a gentler, balanced boost

MID LIFT · 13° TILTMID LIFT

Mid Lift provides a gradual straight lift before transitioning forward, easing you up at a gentler 13° seat angle. It is the middle ground — supportive but more relaxed — ideal for people who want assistance without being pushed all the way forward, and it makes returning to a seated position especially easy.

Good to know: Mid Lift is currently available on all models except 5-Zone chairs with Twilight Tilt Technology. Not sure whether your chair qualifies? Call us at (713) 695-4939 and we’ll confirm in a minute.

3. Straight Lift — the exclusive level rise

STRAIGHT LIFT · VERTICALSTRAIGHT LIFT

Straight Lift is the exclusive feature you will not find on other recliners. The seat rises straight up with no forward tilt, which:

  • Enables safe transfers with the assistance of a caregiver — you stay level and predictable.
  • Helps smooth transitions to and from power and manual wheelchairs.
  • Provides relief for those with back pain by removing the forward-tilt strain.
  • Lets taller users adjust seat height for a more comfortable starting position.

How to convert your chair (about 5 minutes)

Here is the part people love: you do not need a technician to change modes. Switching between Normal (Full Lift), Mid Lift, and Straight Lift is a simple at-home adjustment using the Clevis Pin and Hairpin on the lift frame. If you are handy enough to change a light fixture, you can do this. Here is the step-by-step:

Golden lift chair Straight Lift conversion lower bar, Clevis Pin and Hairpin
Conversion uses the lower bar on each side of the lift frame: the middle hole sets Mid Lift, and the top hole sets Straight Lift.
  1. Unplug everything first. Disconnect the transformer from the wall outlet and unplug the battery backup from the chair.
  2. Turn the chair to reach the frame. Gently push the chair over onto the footrest, turn it upside down, or lay it on its side — on the side opposite the hand control.
  3. Remove the pins. Take out the Clevis Pin and Hairpin that retain the lower bar on the rearward sides of the lift frame. (Golden’s flyer has a QR code for a close-up look.)
  4. Choose your mode. Move the bar up and align the holes — the middle hole is Mid Lift and the top hole is Straight Lift.
  5. Re-pin it. Insert the Clevis Pin into the new location and reinstall the Hairpin.
  6. Repeat on the other side so both sides match, then plug the chair back in.

Prefer not to DIY? No problem — if you bought your Golden chair from us, bring it by or give us a call and we’ll walk you through it or set the mode for you. Golden also publishes a tutorial video and owner’s manual for the conversion.

Why this matters when you are choosing a lift chair

When you are comparing lift chairs, it is easy to focus on fabric and cup holders. But the feature that actually protects independence — and prevents falls — is how the chair gets you to your feet. Straight Lift is the only system of its kind, and the fact that it is built into every Golden chair means you are not paying extra or buying a special model to get it. You simply set the chair to the mode that fits the person today, and re-adjust it as their needs change over the months and years. That is real, lasting value.

Every Golden lift recliner is also made in the USA, built on a hardwood frame, and FDA-listed as a Class II medical device — the kind of chair that lasts for years rather than seasons.

See Straight Lift for yourself

The easiest way to understand Straight Lift is to feel it. Come sit in a Golden chair at our Houston showroom and we’ll demonstrate all three transfer modes so you can feel the difference between a forward tilt and a level rise. Call us at (713) 695-4939 and we’ll help you match the model, size, and lift mode to your needs — or browse the full lineup online and we’ll handle white-glove delivery and setup anywhere in greater Houston.
